WINTER BEES and taking Varroa Seriously

  • GRCC Lakeshore Campus 12335 James Street Holland, MI, 49424 United States (map)

Ana Heck, Michigan State University's Apiculture Extension Educator. Learn about winter bees, which are worker honey bees that develop specifically to survive the winter. Beekeepers should work to keep varroa mite and virus pressure low during the time when they develop in order to increase chances of colony survival.

Ana began working with honey bees in Nicaragua, and then she worked with the University of Minnesota Bee Squad and Michigan State University's Department of Entomology. Her role engages beekeepers, growers, pesticide applicators, and home gardeners to improve the health of managed pollinators. Ana holds a Master’s degree in Public Policy and a graduate minor in Entomology from the University of Minnesota.
